    Under the supervision of a Circuit/Family Court Judge, serves as an official court stenographer making verbatim records of all court proceedings. Prepares typed transcripts of records and maintains related files. May provide instant real-time translation.

    Essential Functions
    1. Maintains the official court record of the court proceedings, including identification of speakers, notations of exhibits or drawing of diagrams. May mark and maintain exhibits depending on the Judge's preference per case. 
    2. Prepares and produces a hard copy transcript on request or for appellate purposes by editing and proofreading computerized stenographic notes. 
    3. Ensures the accuracy of the spoken word, including legal, medical, and technical terminology, in order to provide an accurate verbatim transcript. 
    4. May provide instant real-time translations. 
    5. Reads portions of the transcript during a trial on the judge's request. Asks speakers to clarify inaudible statements as necessary. 
    6. Records, files and maintains court proceedings taken down on computer disk and steno notepaper. 
    7. Prepares and submits required certificates and affidavits of transcript mailings to appellate court and other parties. 
    8. Responds to miscellaneous correspondence and telephone inquiries providing information and assistance. 
    9. Performs various other support tasks as requested by the judge or judicial staff.

    Education: Completion of an approved course in court reporting.

    Experience: Two or more years of reporting experience with a minimum of one year involving verbatim transcription in a courtroom setting.

    The Mission of the Clerks Office:
    The mission of the Clerk's Office is to assist the Court in the timely disposition of all case
    matters by providing support services to schedule cases before the Court, to maintain the
    official record of the Court, to maintain all monetary transactions and financial records of
    the Court, and to maintain all jury-related operations of the Court in a manner that renders
    efficient, effective, and courteous service to the general public, jurors, judges, judicial staff
    members, the federal bar, other federal and state courts, litigants, and other governmental
    agencies.

    The Eastern District of Michigan covers 34 counties within the eastern half of the lower
    peninsula with courthouses in Ann Arbor, Bay City, Detroit, Flint, and Port Huron.

    The Clerks Office currently serves 14 active judges, 7 senior judges, and 7 full-time
    magistrate judges.


    How a Court Reporter Supports the Mission:

    This position is located in the Court Operations Unit of the Clerk's Office, reporting directly
    to the Court Reporter Supervisor.The employee is responsible for the verbatim reporting
    of proceedings held before United States District Judges and Magistrate Judges and for the
    transcription of those proceedings upon request.Travel to the divisional offices may be
    required.


    Salary:

    Level 1:$90,738

    Level 2:$95,275requires merit certification

    Level 3:$99,813requires Realtime certification

    Level 4:$104,349requires Realtime certification and merit certification

    Merit certification = registered merit reporter certificate from the National Court
    Reporters Association (NCRA)

    Realtime certification = successful completion of a certified Realtime examination by
    NCRA or equivalent exam


    Qualifications:

    Qualifications must be met at the time of application.

    The successful candidate must possess excellent organizational skills to permit the
    production of transcripts within strict time limitations, work well under pressure, possess
    excellent communication skills, and be willing to work as part of a team of reporters under
    the direction of the Court Reporter Supervisor in fulfilling the needs of all judicial offices of
    the court. In addition, the candidate must possess tact, good judgment, poise, initiative, and
    maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.

    Required:

    Applicants must possess at least four years of prime court reporting experience in a
    court, in the freelance field of service, or a combination thereof

    Applicants must have qualified by testing for listing on the registry of professional
    reporters of the NCRA or passed an equivalent qualifying examination

    District Court Judge James C Stecker is accepting applications for the position of Official Court Reporter.  Official Court Reporters must be competent in the making, preserving, transcribing and delivery of a verbatim record of trials and other proceedings through the use of machine shorthand (stenographic court reporter).  An Official Court Reporter is under the direct supervision of the judge and is an at-will employee who is expected to perform such duties as may be necessary, assigned and directed by the judge.

    Competence must be demonstrated by meeting the testing requirements as set out in the Nebraska Supreme Court Rules regarding Court Reporting Personnel. Official Court Reporters are eligible for a salary increase at the end of the provisional period. Official Court Reporters may also engage in freelance reporting activities (e.g., depositions, mental health hearings, grand jury investigation) and are entitled to additional compensation for preparing bills of exceptions and transcriptions.

    Official Court Reporters who would like to work for the Nebraska Judicial Branch and are not interested in doing freelance court reporting are given the option of having the Judicial Branch purchase and keep updated all of their equipment and software. For stenographic official court reporters, this includes providing you with a laptop, docking station, monitor(s), steno machine, software (Eclipse by Advantage Software or Case CATalyst by Stenograph, LLC), microphone and/or handheld device for making a backup digital audio recording of court proceedings, and secure cloud backup storage.

    Bargaining Unit:  TEAMSTERS COURT REPORTER

    The Ninth Judicial District is seeking to fill an Official Stenographic or Electronic Court Reporter position for Judge Korey Wahwassuck, who is chambered in the Itasca County Courthouse in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

    This at-will, exempt position is in the Official Court Reporter classification, and is responsible for the verbatim recording and transcription of testimony of judicial proceedings, hearings, and conferences in compliance with all applicable statutes and court rules or as directed by the appointing authority and for administrative support.

    Example of Duties

    The following are examples of major job duties expected for this position to perform (any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed):

    • Capture verbatim record of court proceedings and read back testimony upon request.
    • Prepare court orders and transcripts as requested by judge.
    • Maintain accurate and complete files and records and awareness of Rules, Statutes, and policy changes/additions/deletions.
    • Serve as confidential assistant to the judge, includes performing court-related and confidential duties as directed by the judge.
    • Confer with the judge frequently to discuss court and community activities and coordinate and schedule appointments.  Includes interacting with members of the public and justice system partners.
    • Some travel may be required.
    Typical Qualifications

    Stenographic Court Reporter:  A person seeking employment with the Branch for the position of official stenographic court reporter must meet the following minimum qualifications:

    • Graduation from high school or equivalent; and
    • Graduation from a court reporting school approved by the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) within the past two years; or compliance with one of the following:
    1. Received a Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) designation from the NCRA; or
    2. Received an equivalent certification from another state or territory of the United States, or professional court reporter association; or
    3. Have been practicing proficiently as a professional stenographic reporter for the past two (2) years and within one (1) month of hire, accurately take a minimum of 20 minutes of court proceedings alongside a stenographic court reporter who has an RPR designation or certification as provided in clauses (1) or (2), and then produce a transcript with 95% accuracy as described in (4) below; or
    4. Obtain RPR designation from the NCRA within two years of hire.  Pending receipt of the RPR designation, must, within one (1) month of hire, accurately take a minimum of 20 minutes of court proceedings alongside a stenographic court reporter who has an RPR designation or certification as provided in clauses (1) or (2), and then produce a transcript.  The participating RPR certified stenographer will determine that Ninety-five (95) percent accuracy is achieved to successfully complete this requirement.
    Electronic Court Reporter - A person seeking employment with the Branch for the position of official electronic court reporter must meet the following minimum qualifications:

    • Graduation from high school or equivalent; and
    • Any combination of training and work experience which indicates possession of the knowledge, abilities, and skills listed in the classification specification; and
    • Compliance with one of the following within three months of hire:
    1. Receive an Electronic Court Reporter certificate from the State Court Administrator, or
    2. Receive an Electronic Court Reporter Certification and an Electronic Transcriber Certification from the American Association of Electronic Reporters and Transcribers (AAERT); or
    3. Receive an Electronic Court Reporter certification from an accredited court reporter school.

    The  30th Circuit Court in Lansing has an opening for a realtime-proficient Official Court Reporter. CRR preferred but not required. If candidate does not have CRR, he/she should be willing to work toward that designation.
